A few days ago after I told the story of the Ghost Dog to a group of Jr. & Sr. kindergarten classes, a 4 year old boy asked, "Where did the ghost dog come from?" In the story, the ghost dog comes out of the night sky where he lives among the stars, but I knew that was not what this little deep thinker was asking. I said what I always say, when confronted with a big question, "I don't know. What do you think?" A little girl suggested that a king and a queen with a magic wand invented him. A little boy said, 'he jumped down from the sky.' Another little girl wrote him off as 'just magic.'
After listening to several other suggestions, the questioner said, "I think that a real dog died and became a ghost and went up into the sky. He came back down to the earth for visit."
He was satisfied with his conclusion, so, we moved on to the next story.
